Softball Game Preview: Mattanawcook Lynx vs. Calais Blue Devils

Mattanawcook is a perfect 5-0 against Calais since May of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Lynx will be playing at home against the Blue Devils at 4:00 p.m. Neither Mattanawcook nor Calais posted many runs in their last games, so it might be the pitching crews that decide this one.

Mattanawcook fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against Orono on Monday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They took a 5-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Riots. The loss was the Lynx's first of the season.

Julianna Cloukey spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and one unearned) runs on seven hits and racked up six Ks.

At the plate, Mattanawcook saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Kalista Lazo, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and one run. Those stolen bases marked the first that Lazo has snagged this season.

Machias hit Calais with a 11-run first inning on Monday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Blue Devils lost 14-1 to the Bulldogs. The Blue Devils haven't had much luck with the Bulldogs recently, as the team has come up short the last six times they've met.

Calais' loss dropped their record down to 1-3. As for Mattanawcook, their defeat was their first of the season and makes their record 3-1.

Calais' pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Mattanawcook has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 10 hits per game. It's a different story for Calais, though, as they've been averaging 14.2 hits. Given Mattanawcook's sizable advantage in that area, the Blue Devils will need to find a way to close that gap.

Mattanawcook took their win against Calais in their previous matchup back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 19-0 score. Will the Lynx repeat their success, or do the Blue Devils have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
