Two dominant backs in Antonio Muniz and Jamarian Miller are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Gulf Buccaneers will be playing at home against the Fivay Falcons at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, both teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Last Friday, Gulf didn't have too much trouble with Lecanto at home as they won 35-18. The victory was just what Gulf needed coming off of a 49-28 loss in their prior matchup.
Muniz continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, rushing for 300 yards and four touchdowns while picking up 11.5 yards per carry. Muniz's longest rush was for an incredible 83 yards. Jaydn Wood was another key contributor, throwing for 139 yards and a touchdown while completing 85.7% of his passes.
Meanwhile, Fivay had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 26.5 points), and they went ahead and made it three on Friday. They blew past Citrus 35-6 at home. The result was nothing new for Fivay, who have now won three matches by 29 points or more so far this season.
Miller was his usual excellent self, rushing for 86 yards and two touchdowns. Miller is on a roll when it comes to rushing touchdowns, as he's now punched in two or more in the last three games he's played. Samuel Monfre did his part to keep the secondary busy, picking up 85 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Fivay's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB nine times. The heavy lifting was done by Khyrii Everett and Sal Bonacasa who racked up six sacks between them.
Their wins bumped Gulf to 4-4 and Fivay to 5-2.
Friday's match might be decided on the ground as these two are both standouts in the run game. Gulf has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 211.6 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Fivay struggles in that department as they've been averaging 175.1 per game. It's looking like Friday's game might have some serious battles in the trenches.
Everything came up roses for Gulf against Fivay in their previous meeting back in October of 2022 as the squad secured a 39-0 win. Will Gulf repeat their success, or does Fivay have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
