Basketball Recap: Calvert Takes Loss Despite Strong Efforts from Amani Welch and Brooke Kidwell

Calvert lost against Huntingtown back in December of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Calvert Cavaliers took a 44-34 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Huntingtown Hurricanes. While losing is never fun, the Cavaliers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Maryland basketball rankings (they are ranked 206th, while the Hurricanes are ranked 69th).

Despite the defeat, Calvert had strong showings from Brooke Kidwell, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 16 rebounds, and Amani Welch, who posted four points and five steals. Kidwell is on a roll when it comes to boards, as she's now pulled down ten or more in the last nine games she's played dating back to last season.

Huntingtown found their leader in sophomore Eva Powell, who dropped a double-double on 23 points and 14 rebounds. Powell continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played.

This is the second loss in a row for Calvert and nudges their season record down to 3-9. As for Huntingtown, their victory was their sixth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 9-1.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Calvert will challenge Northern at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Huntingtown, they will take on Patuxent at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
