The Lions won the last time they faced the Ambassadors and Genesis Ortez did her part to make sure it happened again. The Lions were the clear victors by a 3-0 margin over the Ambassadors on Thursday with plenty of help from Ortez, who had 11 digs and four aces. She is on a roll when it comes to digs, as she's now had 11 or more in each of the last eight games she's played.
The Lions not only won, but also showed off some consistency: they kept the Ambassadors between 15 and 17 points across their sets. The match finished with set scores of 25-16, 25-17, 25-15.
Meanwhile, the Wolves posted their closest victory since August 24, 2024 on Thursday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 3-2 win over the Bears.
The Wolves were staring down a 2-1 deficit headed into the fourth set, but they rallied to take the next two for the win. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 25-15, 23-25, 15-25, 25-18, 15-9.
The Wolves' win came from a few key players the Lions will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Daniela Macias, who had 18 kills, 11 digs, and two aces. That's the most digs she has posted over her last seven matchups. Khobie Magana was another key player, getting nine digs and four aces.
The Wolves was lethal from the service line and finished the match with 12 aces. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now served at least eight aces in four consecutive matches.
The Wolves' victory bumped their record up to 17-8-2. As for the Lions, their win bumped their record up to 6-11.
Here's a few offensive stats to keep an eye on ahead of Monday's contest: The Lions have really dialed in their serving this season, having averaged 6.3 aces per game. However, it's not like the Wolves struggle in that department as they've been averaging 8.8 aces. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
The Lions suffered a grim 3-0 defeat to the Wolves when the teams last played back in October of 2024. Thankfully for the Lions, Lucia Cota (who had 13 aces, ten kills, and five digs) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
