The Germantown Warhawks will square off against the Pius XI Catholic Popes at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Germantown has three straight victories, Pius XI Catholic has nine straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
On Wednesday, Germantown got the win against Brookfield Central by a conclusive 8-1.

Carter Gordon made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two hits in five consecutive appearances. He was even better at the plate, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with three runs, one double, and one RBI. Those three runs gave him a new career-high.
In other pitching news, Germantown got a great performance from Liam Hagland as he struck out seven batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits (and only one walk). Hagland has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances.
Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Ty Olszewski, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three stolen bases and three runs. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last four times he's played. Another player making a difference was Vinny Inga, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with one double and one RBI.
Pius XI Catholic couldn't beat St. John's Northwestern Military Academy on Wednesday even though they stacked five runs on them in the seventh inning. The Popes fell just short of the Lancers by a score of 10-8. That's two games in a row now that the Popes have lost by exactly two runs.
Vaughn Weber was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. He tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Weber was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with three runs and one double.
In other batting news, Owen Hickethier made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, four RBI, and one triple. Pius XI Catholic is 2-1 when Hickethier posts two or more stolen bases, but 1-13 otherwise. Morgan Gillitzer was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
Germantown's win bumped their record up to 13-4. As for Pius XI Catholic, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-14.
Everything went Germantown's way against Pius XI Catholic when the teams last played back in May of 2024, as Germantown made off with a 15-5 victory. Will the Warhawks repeat their success, or do the Popes have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
