Even though the Althoff Catholic Crusaders scored an imposing 60 points on Friday, the Mt. Vernon Rams still came out on top. Mt. Vernon took their contest against Althoff Catholic 68-60. Given Mt. Vernon's advantage in MaxPreps' Illinois basketball rankings (they are ranked 49th, while Althoff Catholic is ranked 129th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Mt. Vernon to victory, but perhaps none more so than Navontae D nesbit jr., who scored 16 points along with five assists. D nesbit jr. hasn't dropped below 15 points for ten straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Marlin Price, who scored 15 points.
Mt. Vernon pushed their record up to 18-6 with that victory, which was their 20th straight at home dating back to last season. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 56.8 points per game. As for Althoff Catholic, they have been struggling recently, as they've lost five of their last six matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 12-12 record this season.
Mt. Vernon won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Mater Dei at 7:30 p.m. on January 27th. As for Althoff Catholic, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Maryville Christian at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
