Basketball Recap: Smithson Valley Comes Up Short

Smithson Valley lost against Veterans Memorial back in January of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Smithson Valley Rangers were just a bucket shy of victory and fell 47-46 to the Veterans Memorial Patriots. The match marked the Rangers' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.

When it comes to explaining why Smithson Valley lost, don't look at Wayne Jurica. Despite the final result, he went 6 of 10 from beyond the arc en route to 22 points. Jurica's afternoon made it five games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Robert Gutierrez, who posted 11 points.

Veterans Memorial got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Zydon Clark out in front who put up six points and five rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Brandon Hailey, who had seven points.

Smithson Valley now has a losing record at 8-9. As for Veterans Memorial, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six games, which provided a massive bump to their 14-9 record this season.

Coincidentally, the two teams will both be playing Boerne-Champion the next time they take the court. Veterans Memorial will head out to face Boerne-Champion at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, while Smithson Valley will host them at 6:30 p.m. on January 10th.
