Rincon/University had lost seven straight at home, but on Friday they dropped their record down to 4-21 to make it eight. They lost 27-9 to the Catalina Foothills Falcons. If the Rangers were looking for revenge after losing 11-1 to the Falcons when the teams met back in March of 2016, then they'll just have to keep looking.
Keith Cook made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double. Another player making a difference was Agathon Schwartz, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one triple and one RBI.
As for Catalina Foothills, they have been performing well recently as they've won 11 of their last 13 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 20-5 record this season. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 12 matches by six runs or more this season.
On Catalina Foothills' side, Alek Leyva was a major factor no matter where he played. He tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Leyva has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up a single hit in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one run and one RBI.
In other pitching news, Isaac Kirkendall looked comfortable as he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off six hits. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in strikeouts (four).
Back at the plate, Nate Shoemaker and Evan Messenger did most of the damage at the plate: Shoemaker went a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs, while Messenger went a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBI, two doubles, and one stolen base. Those five RBI gave Shoemaker a new career-high. Bryce Weege was another key player, going 1-for-2 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base.
Rincon/University does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Catalina Foothills, they will head out to face off against Salpointe Catholic at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Falcons 3.4, the Lancers 2.8) so any runs scored will be well earned.
