MAIS A District 1 recap Oct. 3, 2012
West Memphis Christian moved up to 206 from 306 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in MAIS A District 1. The Black Knights were able to make the jump by beating Greenville Christian 35-18.
DeSoto extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Kirk Academy, 33-7. This was the team's sixth consecutive win.
West Memphis Christian's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Russ Fitzgerald threw for 171 and two touchdowns and Grant Campbell had 106 yards receiving. On the ground David Lewis chipped in 125 yards. Nathan Yarber helped West Memphis Christian's passing attack out by catching two balls for 29 yards.
Thanks to the talents of Fitzgerald and Lewis Chris Norton's team has been able to do all sorts of things on offense. Fitzgerald leads the league in passing with 460 yards, while Lewis has rushed for 536 yards this season. Bayou Academy's Caleb Pilgrim leads the league in receiving yards with 202 on five catches.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Deer Creek takes on Strider Academy. The Warriors are in second place, while the Rams are in sixth place.
The Black Knights led MAIS A District 1 in scoring this week after putting up 35 points on the Saints. Fitzgerald ran for 20 yards in the win.
