Football Recap: Make It Four in a Row for Oviedo

Oviedo had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 44.7 points) and they went ahead and made it four on Friday. Everything went their way against the Lake Howell Silverhawks as they made off with a 43-20 win. Considering the Lions have won four contests by more than 22 points this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.

Leading Oviedo to victory were Brock Joyce and Johnnie Cobbs. Joyce rushed for 103 yards and two scores on only ten carries, while Cobbs rushed for 110 yards and a pair of TDs on only 13 carries. Joyce has become a key player for the Lions: the team is undefeated when he posts at least 100 rushing yards, but 1-2 otherwise. DaShon Febres did his part to keep the secondary busy, picking up 123 receiving yards.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Oviedo was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 222 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 158 rushing yards in four consecutive matchups.

On the other side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Oviedo's defense and their three sacks. Miguel Hernandez refused to say out of the backfield, picking up 1.5 sacks all by himself. Oviedo received some extra help from Steven Malone, whose fumble return for a touchdown made for one of the most unforgettable moments.

When it comes to explaining why Lake Howell lost, don't look at Malek Wilkerson. Despite the final result, he rushed for 196 yards and a pair of touchdowns while picking up 8.2 yards per carry, and also picked up 37 receiving yards. With that strong performance, Wilkerson is now averaging an impressive 105.9 rushing yards per game.

Oviedo's record now sits at 5-2. As for Lake Howell, their record is now 5-3.

Looking ahead, Oviedo will face off against University at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Lions are facing the Titans at the right time seeing as the Titans are stuck on a six-game losing streak. As for Lake Howell, they will get a bit of extra time to process the defeat as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Wekiva at 7:00 p.m. on the 24th.
