Mt. Zion has enjoyed a two-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will face off against The Breese Central Cougars at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Illinois (Mt. Zion is ranked 85th, while Breese Central is ranked 92nd).
Last Saturday, Mt. Zion didn't have too much trouble with Effingham at home as they won 21-2. Mt. Zion pushed the score to 21-0 by the end of the third, a deficit Effingham cut but never quite recovered from.
Mt. Zion's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Makobi Adams, who threw for 129 yards and three touchdowns. Karson Bollhorst was in the mix as well, providing Mt. Zion with two touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Breese Central entered their tilt with Cahokia with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. Breese Central enjoyed a cozy 19-2 victory over Cahokia on Saturday.
Breese Central's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Kaden Rakers led the charge by rushing for 117 yards and a touchdown.
Mt. Zion's victory was their seventh straight at home, bumping their overall record up to 8-2. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 36.3 points per game. As for Breese Central, their win bumped their record up to 8-2.
We should be in store for an exciting game Saturday as Mt. Zion and Breese Central have no problem gaining yardage. Mt. Zion has been on an offensive roll this season, having averaged 360.4 total yards per game. However, it's not like Breese Central struggles in that department as they've been averaging 357.4 per game. With a pair of commanding offenses duking it out, the defenses are going to have their work cut out for them.
Mt. Zion couldn't quite finish off Breese Central when the teams last played back in October of 2022 and fell 21-18. Thankfully for Mt. Zion, Conner Freeze (who rushed for 165 yards and a touchdown, and also threw for 94 yards and a touchdown) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? There's only one way to find out.
