Two dominant signal callers in Tremaine Hughes Jr. and George Grant are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. After each having a week off, the St. John Paul II Panthers and the Maclay Marauders will dust off their jerseys to take on one another at 7:30 p.m. on November 17th. St. John Paul II will be looking to keep their four-game home win streak (dating back to last season) alive.
Last Friday, St. John Paul II suffered a tough 37-13 defeat at the hands of Pensacola Catholic. St. John Paul II was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 28-7.
Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the most dominant came from Hughes Jr., who rushed for 80 yards on only five carries, and also threw for 243 yards and a touchdown. Jamarie Blackshear was another key contributor, picking up 109 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Meanwhile, even though Taylor County scored an imposing 34 points on Friday, Maclay still came out on top. Maclay won a matchup that couldn't have been any closer, slipping by Taylor County 35-34. The win made it back-to-back wins for Maclay.
Grant continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, throwing for 322 yards and three touchdowns while completing 73.7% of his passes, and also punching in two touchdowns on the ground. Another player making a difference was Nash Beshears, who picked up 130 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
St. John Paul II's loss dropped their record down to 4-6. As for Maclay, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matches, which provided a nice bump to their 5-5 record this season.
Everything came up roses for St. John Paul II against Maclay when the teams last played back in September of 2022 as the squad secured a 39-0 win. Does St. John Paul II have another victory up their sleeve, or will Maclay turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
