Chestatee (Gainesville, Ga.) captured the lead in the fourth quarter and held on for a 24-20 victory over
Stephens County (Toccoa, Ga.) on Saturday. The War Eagles captured the lead for good when
Jordan Degraff ran for a touchdown.
The Indians pulled ahead on a touchdown run by
Chaz Thornton, and subsequently went into halftime leading 7-3. The War Eagles took the lead for good with a Degraff touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Despite scoring zero points in the third, Chestatee still trailed by 4 points going into the fourth quarter. But 21 points in the fourth helped CHS pull out the victory.
The loss snapped Stephens County's 4-game winning streak.
The Gainesville school's standout player in the win was Degraff. The senior quarterback ran for two touchdowns.
SC's Thornton played well. The senior running back ran for two touchdowns. He has now scored 12 touchdowns on the season.
The victory is a complete turnaround from last season's game between these two teams, which the Toccoa school took, 28-0.
The loss comes after Stephens County defeated Walnut Grove 61-20 last week. With the win the War Eagles extended their winning streak to three games.
In a AAAA Region 8 game next week Stephens County (4-1) takes on Monroe Area, and Chestatee (3-1) will go up against Johnson also in a AAAA Region 8 game.
