The El Segundo Eagles will venture away from home to challenge the El Rancho Dons at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.
El Rancho will square off against a team with plenty of momentum: El Segundo extended their winning streak to three on Friday. The Eagles claimed a resounding 35-0 victory over Centennial. The final result isn't all that surprising considering the Eagles' considerable advantage in MaxPreps' California football rankings (they are ranked 241st, while the Apaches are ranked 830th).
Ryan Wiacek continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, throwing for 199 yards and three TDs while completing 85.7% of his passes, and also punching in one touchdown on the ground. Lincoln Quaintance helped Wiacek out on the ground, picking up 43 receiving yards and one score, while also rushing for 43 yards.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask El Rancho). They put the hurt on Whittier with a sharp 36-12 win on Friday. The score was close at halftime, but the Dons pulled away in the second half with 23 points.
El Rancho's win came from a few key players El Segundo will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Nathan Carlos, who rushed for 23 yards and one TD, and also caught one touchdown. Santiago Salazar also helped out with an impressive 89 receiving yards.
El Rancho's run defense was locked in: Whittier could only muster 3.4 yards per carry. While one picked up at least seven total tackles, Andrew Orihuela stood above the rest. He picked up 1.5 sacks and made seven total tackles (2.0 for loss). El Rancho's ground attack was stronger, having averaged 4.8.
El Rancho's defense didn't let the opposing QB, get away unscathed either: they got into the backfield for three sacks. Orihuela refused to say out of the backfield, picking up 1.5 sacks all by himself. He was another major factor on D, picking up 1.5 sacks and making seven total tackles (2.0 for loss).
El Segundo's record now sits at 7-1. As for El Rancho, their record is now 5-3.
Friday's contest might be decided on the ground. El Segundo has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 203.8 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like El Rancho struggles in that department as they've been averaging 154.6 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.
