Basketball Recap: Cairo Falls Despite Big Games from Kelsey Mitchell and Jy'kortnee Brown

Cairo was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They opened the new year with a less-than-successful 59-49 loss to the Thomasville Bulldogs. While losing is never fun, the Syrupmakers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 429th, while the Bulldogs are ranked 159th).

Despite the defeat, Cairo had strong showings from Jy'Kortnee Brown, who posted 18 points and five assists, and Kelsey Mitchell, who had eight points and six rebounds. The dominant performance gave Mitchell a new career-high in boards.

Even though they lost, Cairo smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive boards they've managed all season.

Thomasville's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Monte Colvin, who went 5 of 9 on his way to 15 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jordan Mitchell, who put up 12 points along with five rebounds and four steals.

Cairo's loss dropped their record down to 2-9. As for Thomasville, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 6-3 record this season.

Cairo didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 95-36 defeat against Monroe on the 7th. As for Thomasville, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 61-50 win against Bacon County on the 7th.
