Mark Sooy spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned (and four unearned) runs on seven hits and racked up eight Ks. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Jack Bodine made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored a run while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. That run was his first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Josh Bodine, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.
Meanwhile, Pennsville Memorial got the win against Salem on Wednesday by a conclusive 9-1. Considering the Eagles have won five contests by more than seven runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.
Chase Burchfield made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits over six innings pitched. What's more, he posted four strikeouts, the most he's had since back in May of 2024. He was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-3.
In other batting news, Connor Starn was a standout: he got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one triple, one stolen base, and one run. Mikey McClincy was another key player, going 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Pennsville Memorial pushed their record up to 6-3 with the victory, which was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.5 runs over those games. As for Cumberland, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-8.
Cumberland skirted past Pennsville Memorial 7-5 when the teams last played back in May of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Colts since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
