Baseball Recap: Sunday's Win Is Wellsboro's Sixth in Last Eight Outings

Wellsboro came out on top against Athens on Sunday thanks in part to the team's impressive four-run second inning. The Hornets walked away with an 8-5 win over the Wildcats. This was a revenge game for the Hornets: when they faced off against the Wildcats back in March, they had to take a 16-10 defeat.

Maxwell Mascho made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out eight over 4.1 innings pitched. He also allowed no hits, which is notable because Wellsboro is 2-1 when he allows at most one hit, but 7-8 otherwise. Mascho was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with three RBI, one run, and one double. Those three hits gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Gabe Cuneo, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs and one stolen base. He is becoming a predictor of Wellsboro's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 2-1 (and 7-8 when he doesn't).

Wellsboro kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Athens only managed three hits.

Wellsboro has been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 9-9 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.1 runs over those games. As for Athens, their loss ended a seven-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 14-3.

Coming up, Wellsboro will host Williamson at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The timing is sure in the Hornets' favor as the team sits on three straight wins at home while the Warriors have been banged up by five consecutive losses on the road. As for Athens, they will venture away from home to take on Hughesville at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
