Softball Recap: Gibbs Falls Short Against Ranked Alcoa

Gibbs faced Alcoa in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Wednesday. The Eagles fell just short of the Tornadoes by a score of 5-4. The Eagles' defeat signaled the end of their eight-game winning streak.

Lacey Keck spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and four unearned) runs on eight hits. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Skylynne Luttrell was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-4 with one home run and three RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Shelby Williams, who scored a run while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.

Gibbs' loss dropped their record down to 23-3. As for Alcoa, they are on a roll lately: they've won 12 of their last 13 matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 15-3-1 record this season.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Gibbs will venture away from home to face off against Union County at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Alcoa, they will head out to challenge Maryville at 12:00 p.m. on Friday. The Tornadoes' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Red Rebels have averaged an impressive 7 runs per game this season.
