Doherty hasn't had much luck against Valor Christian recently, but that could start to change on Wednesday. The Doherty Spartans will head out on the road to take on the Valor Christian Eagles at 6:30 p.m. Doherty is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 54.2 points per game this season.
Doherty is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Saturday. They snuck past Rock Canyon with a 35-29 victory. The Spartans haven't had any issues with the Jaguars recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive win against them.
Lalannie Donald was the offensive standout of the game as she posted 13 points and seven boards. Another player making a difference was Aubrey Smith, who put up four points.
Meanwhile, Valor Christian waltzed into their matchup on Saturday with 17 straight wins... but they left with 18. They took their contest with ease, bagging a 91-59 victory over the Bison. The game was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 55-30.
Doherty better keep an eye on Peyton Jones. She was instrumental in Valor Christian's win, shooting 7-for-12 from long range and dropping a double-double with 35 points and ten rebounds. That's the most boards Jones has posted since back in February of 2024. Rylie Beers was another key player, shooting 67% from the field to rack up 16 points and five assists.
Valor Christian was working as a unit and finished the game with 17 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Vista PEAK Prep only nine assists.
Valor Christian pushed their record up to 22-2 with the win, which was their 16th straight at home dating back to last season. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 74.9 points over those games. As for Doherty, their record now sits at 18-6.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Doherty has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 29 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Valor Christian struggles in that department as they've been averaging 32 boards. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Doherty might still be hurting after the 78-56 loss they got from Valor Christian when the teams last played back in February of 2024. Can Doherty avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
