Verrado had lost three straight, but after bumping their record up to 5-4 on Friday that streak is in the rearview. They blew past the Tolleson Wolverines 63-38. The Vipers' offense stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most points they've scored all season.
Malachi Wilt produced another solid effort throwing for 332 yards and five TDs while completing 73.1% of his passes. His passing game has become a key predictor of Verrado's success: the team is 5-1 when his passer rating is 100 or higher, but only 0-3 otherwise. Jesse Abundes helped Wilt out on the ground, rushing for 58 yards and three scores on only five carries.
Special teams also played a big role in the game for Verrado, adding 15 points to the final score. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Travis Kamp, who ran a kickoff back for a touchdown.
As for Tolleson, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 6-3. Despite 62 more yards than Verrado, the Wolverines couldn't convert that extra yardage to scores.
Defeat or not, Tolleson got some senior leadership from Youngmin Lee and Rico Blassingame. Lee threw for 341 yards and four touchdowns, while Blassingame picked up 169 receiving yards and three TDs. Those 341 passing yards set a new season-high mark for Lee. Another player making a difference was Quentin Gavin, who picked up 112 receiving yards and one score.
