The Weddington Warriors will take on the Independence Patriots at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The pair have allowed few points on average, (Weddington: 12.7, Independence: 15.7) so any points scored will be well earned.
Weddington extended their postseason success on Friday against Grimsley. They took down the Whirlies 44-27. Weddington's victory was all the more impressive since Grimsley was averaging only 13.64 points allowed on the season.
Nick Diamond was the offensive standout of the match as he rushed for 129 yards and three touchdowns on only 14 carries. The team also got some help courtesy of Tyler Budge, who rushed for 94 yards and a touchdown on only 12 carries.
Another reason for the win was Weddington's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for five sacks. The heavy lifting was done by Braeden Barger and Michael Luisa who racked up 4.5 sacks between them.
Meanwhile, Independence faced Butler in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Independence sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 10-7 victory over Butler on Friday.
The match pitted two dominant backs against one another in Jayden Jones and Jayden Williams. Jones had a great game and rushed for 174 yards while picking up 7.6 yards per carry. Meanwhile, Williams did his best for the losing side, rushing for 116 yards.
Weddington is on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last ten matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 12-2 record this season. As for Independence, their victory bumped their record up to 11-3.
Here's a few offensive stats to keep an eye on ahead of Friday's contest: Weddington has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 169.3 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Independence struggles in that department as they've been even better at 202.6 per game. It's looking like Friday's matchup might have some serious battles in the trenches.
