Even though the Cuthbertson Cavaliers scored an imposing 61 points on Friday, the Sun Valley Spartans still came out on top. Sun Valley rang in the new year with a 70-61 win over Cuthbertson. That result was just more of the same for these two, as Sun Valley also won the last time the pair played back in February of 2023.
Sun Valley was led to victory by Kaleel Benjamin and Nathan Tavares. Benjamin scored 24 points along with nine rebounds, while Tavares scored 19 points along with eight assists and three steals. Those 24 points set a new season-high mark for him. The team also got some help courtesy of Devin Sumpter, who scored 17 points along with six rebounds.
Sun Valley's victory ended a four-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 5-9. As for Cuthbertson, they are on a seven-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 3-10.
Sun Valley's road trip will continue as they head out to face Corvian Community at 4:00 p.m. on January 6th. Corvian Community is coming into the game hot, having won their last seven games. As for Cuthbertson, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Marvin Ridge at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Marvin Ridge presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Cuthbertson in North Carolina (Marvin Ridge is ranked 78th, while Cuthbertson is ranked 422nd).
