II Section I recap Oct. 16, 2012
Chavez was able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after topping Fairfax. The Champions came in at 22 in the state poll after placing at number 27 last week.
Gila Ridge was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from eighth to fifth in II Section I. Earlier in the week, the Hawks defeated San Luis 47-0.
Deryn McGee was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 242 yards on 27 carries as La Joya Community fell to Horizon. Marc Laborin also contributed to the rushing game with 37 yards on the ground.
Lamont Williams made the biggest impact on defense this week as Ironwood topped the Fighting Lobos. The 5-foot-11 senior forced one fumble.
Grady Atkins put up the best numbers through the air as Lake Havasu fell to Mohave. He finished with 17 completions for 230 yards and one touchdown. Atkins' favorite target this week was GARRETT LINNENKAMP, who caught eight passes for 111 yards.
Zepeda was the best wideout in the league this week as the Spartans lost to the Huskies. Zepeda racked up nine receptions for 194 yards. Daniel Serrano helped Camelback's passing attack out by catching four balls for 60 yards.
Chavez's Arturo Macias and Jaylyn Shans have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading II Section I in both passing and receiving yards. Macias has thrown for 1796 yards this season, while Shans, a 5-foot-10 receiver, has 28 catches for 603 yards. Willow Canyon's Antony Thompson leads the league in rushing yards with 1214.
Kellis's Blaine Freeman needs only 86 yards against Liberty next week to surpass 1,000 rushing yards for the season. In 118 carries Freeman has accumulated 914 yard this year.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when the Stampede take on Apollo. At the moment, Fairfax is in sixth, while the Hawks are in third.
Bill patter's team extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Kevin Belcher's team, 52-0. The victory was the eighth in a row for the Champions.
