Troy and Wellsboro are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2019, but likely not for long. The Trojans are taking a road trip to challenge the Hornets at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams are strolling into their contests after big wins in their previous games.
If Troy beats Wellsboro with 12 runs on Tuesday, it's going to be the team's new lucky number: they've won their past two matches with that exact score. The Trojans put the hurt on Canton with a sharp 12-2 victory on Monday. The Trojans might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five games by ten runs or more this season.
Joseph Frye made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-4.
In other batting news, Brendan Gilliland and Mason Smith did most of the damage at the plate: Gilliland scored two runs and stole two bases while going 3-for-4, while Smith scored a run while going 1-for-3. What's more, Smith posted three RBI, the most he's had since back in May of 2024. Evan Woodward was another key player, scoring two runs while going 2-for-4.
Troy was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .556. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Wellsboro). Their pitcher stepped up to hand Sayre a 17-0 shutout on Wednesday. The Hornets haven't had any issues with the Redskins recently, as the game was their third consecutive win against them.
Like Troy, Wellsboro also got a great game from a two-way player: Marek Mascho. He pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off four hits. Mascho also tossed no walks, which is notable because Wellsboro is 2-1 when he allows at most one walk, but 1-4 otherwise. Mascho was even better at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 3-for-3.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Alec Magli, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 2-for-2. He has become a key player for Wellsboro: the team is 2-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 1-4 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Gabe Sprouse, who scored three runs and stole a base.
The victory (which was Troy's third in a row) raised their record to 5-2. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.7 runs over those games. As for Wellsboro, their victory bumped their record up to 3-5.
Wellsboro's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Troy hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .389. It's a different story for Wellsboro, though, as they've only averaged .250. Will they be able to contain Troy's hitters?
Everything went Troy's way against Wellsboro when the teams last played back in March, as Troy made off with a 12-2 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Trojans since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
