The Service Cougars will take on the Chugiak Mustangs at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. Service is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 11 runs per game this season.
Service is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Alaska's top teams: Soldotna, who was ranked first at the time (Service was ranked second). The Cougars came up short against the Stars on Thursday, falling 18-10. The pitching woes were uncharacteristic for the Cougars, who until this contest were averaging 3.15 runs allowed.
Service got a big performance out of Rilen Niclai, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Casey Stoops, who went 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Chugiak unfortunately witnessed the end of their six-game winning streak on Thursday. They took an 11-8 hit to the loss column at the hands of Colony. The pitching woes were uncharacteristic for the Mustangs, who until this game were averaging 2.93 runs allowed.
Owen McNeil and Ethan Atkinson did some serious damage despite the final result: McNeil went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run, while Atkinson went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
Chugiak's loss dropped their record down to 13-2. As for Service, their defeat was their first of the season and makes their record 12-1.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Saturday as neither team is afraid to steal. Service has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 4.1 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Chugiak struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 4.9 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Service came out on top in a nail-biter against Chugiak when the teams last played back in May of 2025, sneaking past 5-3. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Cougars since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
