5A Region 3 recap September 24, 2013
Laurel extended the longest winning streak in 5A Region 3 this week by beating Mendenhall, 12-0. The victory was the fourth in a row for the Golden Tornadoes.
Brookhaven was able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after a bye. The Panthers came in at 22 in the state poll after placing at number 26 last week.
Laurel's dynamic duo of Keon Howard and Octavious Cooley proved tough for the Tigers to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Howard threw for 42 yards and Cooley had 31 yards receiving. Dauro Rogers helped Laurel's passing attack out by catching 2 balls for 11 yards.
Todd Breland's team's dynamic duo of Howard and Cooley proved to be unstoppable against Mendenhall, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week.
Cooley was the best wideout in the league this week as the Golden Tornadoes beat Paul Purvis' team.
Howard put up the best numbers through the air as Laurel bested the Tigers.
Dj Sanders was the most successful running back in the league this week. In 24 carries, he ran for 135 yards as West Jones defeated Mendenhall. Teammate Deionte Keyes added to the ground attack by rushing for 77 yards.
Sanders provided a threat through the air and on the ground as the Mustangs topped Harrison Central. Sanders' favorite target this week was Jalen Lindsay, who caught 2 passes for 22 yards.
6-foot-2 quarterback Howard of Laurel is the league leader in passing yards this season with 648. He has also thrown 7 touchdowns. The leading receiver in the league this season is Javontae Trevillion. The Brookhaven star has 13 catches for 350 yards.
The top two teams in 5A Region 3 will face off this week when first place Laurel takes on second place Brookhaven.
The league will see a high scoring game when Brookhaven and the Golden Tornadoes face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, Tommy Clopton's team comes in having scored 117 this season, while Laurel has scored 94.
Wingfield made the biggest leap in the national rankings this week, rising to 9,583 from 10,368. They were able to move up in the ranks after a 8-0 victory over Lanier last week.
