Desert Christian is 2-8 against Benson since January of 2017 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Saturday. The Desert Christian Eagles will be playing in front of their home fans against the Benson Bobcats at 4:00 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Desert Christian came tearing into Wednesday's matchup with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 18.8 points) and they left with even more momentum. They blew past Ray 38-12. The game was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 26-4.
Anika Mulkey was her usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 20 points and 13 rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points she has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Addison Jones, who scored three points along with seven rebounds and two steals.
Meanwhile, Benson scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Thursday. They claimed a resounding 82-35 win over Tombstone at home. The victory was just what Benson needed coming off of a 72-9 loss in their prior contest.
It was another big night for Kaylei Taylor, who dropped a double-double on 22 points and 13 rebounds.
Desert Christian's win bumped their record up to 12-7. As for Benson, their win bumped their record up to an identical 12-7.
Saturday's game is shaping up to be a scrappy match: Desert Christian have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 29.3 rebounds per game. It's a different story for Benson, though, as they've been averaging only 38.2 rebounds per game. Given Desert Christian's sizeable advantage in that area, Benson will need to find a way to close that gap.
Desert Christian took a serious blow against Benson in their previous matchup back in January of 2023, falling 54-20. Can Desert Christian avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
