New Albany (Miss.) captured the lead in overtime and held on for a 10-7 victory over
Lafayette (Oxford, Miss.) on Saturday. The Bulldogs captured the lead for good when
Spencer Day kicked a field goal.
After trailing 7-0 at the half, the Commodores went ahead on a field goal by Day with less than a minute remaining in the fifth.
DK Buford played well for Lafayette. The junior running back caught one touchdown. He has now scored 14 touchdowns on the season.
Kachius Clay played well for New Albany in the victory. The senior wide receiver threw one touchdown. He has now scored four touchdowns on the season.
LHS's lone touchdown came on a 14-yard pass from
Brandon Mack to Buford in the fourth quarter.
NA entered the contest giving up 22.3 points per game this year. The defense really stepped up, holding the Oxford school well below its season average of 33.3 points scored per game.
The victory is a complete turnaround from last season's game between these two teams, which the Commodores took, 50-13.
The defeat comes as a step back for Lafayette, which notched a 35-6 victory over Rosa Fort in its previous outing. With the win New Albany extended its winning streak to three games.
New Albany (5-4) will play a 4A Region 2 game against Rosa Fort next week, while Lafayette (7-2) will take on Senatobia also in a 4A Region 2 game.
