Vina hasn't had much luck against Covenant Christian recently, but that could start to change on Thursday. The Red Devils will host the Eagles at 4:30 p.m. Vina has given up an average of 10.4 runs per game this season, but Thursday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Things were looking good for Vina after they put the first run on the board on Tuesday, but unfortunately for them things went downhill from there. They came up short against Belgreen, falling 19-1.
Meanwhile, after low-scoring totals in their previous six matchup, Covenant Christian brought some dynamite into their most recent contest. They came out on top against Waterloo on Tuesday by a score of 11-1 (the very same score they lost by in their prior game). Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last six times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Ryland Grissman spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on one hit and racked up 11 Ks.
On the hitting side, Bradley Hamby and Niven Gillis did most of the damage at the plate: Hamby went 2-for-4 with five stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI, while Gillis got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI. With that strong performance, Hamby is now averaging an impressive 1.4 stolen bases per game. Aj Karr was another key player, going 3-for-4 with one stolen base and one run.
Covenant Christian was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .414. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in three consecutive games.
Covenant Christian's first win this season bumped their record up to 1-7. As for Vina, their loss dropped their record down to 3-5.
Vina couldn't quite finish off Covenant Christian in their previous matchup back in March of 2019 and fell 3-1. Can the Red Devils avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
