Baseball Game Preview: Lawrence Academy Spartans vs. Milton Academy Mustangs

The Lawrence Academy Spartans will venture away from home to square off against the Milton Academy Mustangs at 3:45 p.m. on Saturday. Given that the two teams suffered a loss in their last games, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this game.

Lawrence Academy is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Massachusetts' top teams: Roxbury Latin, who was ranked 13th at the time (Lawrence Academy was ranked 23rd). The Spartans came up short against the Foxes on Wednesday, falling 11-3. The Spartans have struggled against the Foxes recently, as the game was their third consecutive lost meeting.

Lawrence Academy got a good showing from John Paone, who struck out eight batters over 3.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits (and only one walk). Paone has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks any time he's pitched this season.

At the plate, Lawrence Academy saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Charlie Beauregard, who went 1-for-4 with two stolen bases. Beauregard is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last four games he's played. Daniel Nuti also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.

Meanwhile, Milton Academy came up short against Governor's Academy on Wednesday and fell 4-1. The matchup marked the Mustangs' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.

This is the second loss in a row for Milton Academy and nudges their season record down to 4-5. Those defeats can't be blamed on the team's pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 7 runs in those games. As for Lawrence Academy, their loss dropped their record down to 6-4.

Lawrence Academy was able to grind out a solid victory over Milton Academy when the teams last played back in May of 2024, winning 4-1. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Spartans since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
