It was a good run, but the Simsbury Trojans unfortunately witnessed the end of their five-game winning streak on Friday. They were just a bucket shy of victory and fell 43-42 to Southington. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Simsbury came into the game with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' Connecticut basketball rankings (they are ranked first, while Southington is ranked 29th).
Southington got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Lily Cooper out in front who almost dropped a double-double on nine points and ten rebounds. Another player making a difference was Bethany Borges, who scored seven points along with two blocks.
Simsbury's loss dropped their record down to 17-2. As for Southington, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games, which provided a nice bump to their 10-8 record this season.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Simsbury will take on Glastonbury at 6:45 p.m. on Monday. As for Southington, they will head out on the road to challenge Northwest Catholic at 6:45 p.m. on Monday. Northwest Catholic is coming into the match with four straight defeats at home, meaning Southington will have to defend against a squad hungry for a victory.
