The Farmington Knights are taking a road trip to take on the New Athens Yellow Jackets at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Farmington will be looking to extend their current four-game winning streak.
Farmington had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the six-run drubbing they dealt Notre Dame on Friday. The Knights were the clear victors by a 10-4 margin over the Bulldogs. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Knights considering their two-run performance the game before.
Farmington let Chase Owens and Colby Larkins run wild. Owens scored a run while going 1-for-1, while Larkins scored a run while going 2-for-4. That's the most hits Larkins has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Jackson McDowell, who went 3-for-5 with one RBI.
They weren't the only one making solid contact: Farmington kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
New Athens had taken Steeleville down for two straight games at home, but that winning streak came to an end on Friday. The Yellow Jackets fell just short of the Warriors by a score of 3-2.
Brett Miller spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered three earned runs on five hits and racked up nine Ks. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, New Athens saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jordan Helmers, who went 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI.
New Athens' loss dropped their record down to 4-3. As for Farmington, their win bumped their record up to 6-2.
New Athens' pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Farmington hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .323. It's a different story for New Athens, though, as they've only averaged .251. Will they be able to contain Farmington's hitters?
Farmington came out on top in a nail-biter against New Athens in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, sneaking past 1-0. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Knights since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
