The West Middlesex Big Reds will take on the Mercer Mustangs at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. West Middlesex is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.9 runs per game this season.
West Middlesex made up a huge gap compared to their last game against Sharpsville, but they still couldn't quite topple them. The Big Reds blew past the Blue Devils 11-5 on Monday. That's two games straight that the Big Reds have won by exactly six runs.
Logan Kent made a splash while hitting and pitching. He pitched five innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off four hits. Kent was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with one double and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Roman Golub, who scored a run while going 2-for-4. Another player making a difference was Aiden Puskar, who scored two runs while going 2-for-5.
West Middlesex was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .389. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Sharpsville only posted a batting average of .217.
Meanwhile, it may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Mercer ultimately got the result they hoped for on Monday. They won by a run and slipped past Reynolds 4-3. The victory continues a trend for the Mustangs in their matchups with the Raiders: they've now won eight in a row.
Like West Middlesex, Mercer also got a great game from a two-way player: Aedan Ryhal. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Ryhal also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Mercer is 4-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 1-2 otherwise. Ryhal was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 2-for-3. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last four games he's played.
Mercer's win bumped their record up to 5-3. As for West Middlesex, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-2 record this season.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Wednesday as neither team is afraid to steal. West Middlesex has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.2 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Mercer struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 5.1 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
West Middlesex skirted past Mercer 5-3 when the teams last played back in April of 2024. Will the Big Reds repeat their success, or do the Mustangs have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
