The Leyden Eagles will square off against the Berwyn/Cicero Morton Mustangs at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Leyden is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.3 runs per game this season.
Leyden is probably headed into the game with a chip on their shoulder considering Proviso West just ended the team's three-game winning streak on Tuesday. They fell just short of the Panthers by a score of 8-7.
Leyden got a good showing from Angel Espana, who tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Espana has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits in five consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Julian Martinez made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Angel Gutierrez was another key player, going 1-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, and one double.
Meanwhile, Berwyn/Cicero Morton was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They lost 12-2 to Downers Grove South.
Berwyn/Cicero Morton saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was James Richmond, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one stolen base and one run. Another was Anthony Rodriguez, who got on base in two of his three plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run.
Berwyn/Cicero Morton's defeat dropped their record down to 4-15. As for Leyden, their loss dropped their record down to 8-6.
Berwyn/Cicero Morton's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Leyden has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 8.7 hits per game. It's a different story for Berwyn/Cicero Morton, though, as they've been averaging 9 hits. Given Leyden's sizable advantage in that area, the Mustangs will need to find a way to close that gap.
Leyden beat Berwyn/Cicero Morton 5-0 in their previous meeting two weeks ago. Do the Eagles have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Mustangs turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
