The Valmeyer Pirates scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Wednesday. They were the clear victor by a 55-34 margin over New Athens. For those curious, yes, that was the biggest win Valmeyer has managed all season.
Valmeyer had a senior duo take command as Brooke Miller dropped a double-double on 25 points and 17 rebounds and Kierstin Miller dropped a double-double on 18 points and 11 rebounds. That makes it four consecutive games in which Miller has scored at least 25% of Valmeyer's points. Avery Proffer was another key contributor, scoring six points along with four steals.
When it comes to explaining why New Athens lost, one person who can't be blamed is Mallory Kohnen. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 11 points and 15 rebounds. Kohnen scored a full 32.4% of New Athens' points, the sixth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Abigayle Meyer, who scored 11 points.
Even though they lost, New Athens were smashing the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Valmeyer only pulled down 25 offensive rebounds.
Valmeyer is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matches, which provided a massive bump to their 4-3 record this season. As for New Athens, they still haven't won a game yet this season and fell to 0-10.
Coincidentally, the two teams will both be playing Dupo the next time they take the court. New Athens will host Dupo at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, while Valmeyer will host them at 6:00 p.m. on Monday.
