The East St. Louis Flyers scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Thursday. They claimed a resounding 82-51 win over Carbondale on the road. Given East St. Louis' advantage in MaxPreps' Illinois basketball rankings (they are ranked 34th, while Carbondale is ranked 251st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead East St. Louis to victory, but perhaps none more so than Taylor Powell, who scored 14 points along with six rebounds and five assists. Robert McCline was another key contributor, scoring 16 points along with seven rebounds.
East St. Louis is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 13-6 record this season. As for Carbondale, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 8-13.
East St. Louis' road trip will continue as they head out to face Mt. Vernon at 7:30 p.m. on January 19th. Hopefully Mt. Vernon focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 16 on Thursday. As for Carbondale, they will face off against Charleston at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Charleston is coming into the contest on a three-game losing streak.
