Given Bertie's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 52nd, while Martin County is ranked 377th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Zymiere Dempsey was his usual excellent self, scoring 16 points along with six assists and five steals. Dempsey is absolutely dominating the steal category: he's posted at least two every time he's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Jah'Kelvin Rascoe, who scored 11 points along with five rebounds.
Despite the defeat, Martin County saw an underclassman step up: Jordan Matthewson scored 14 points. Tayvon Lee was another key contributor, scoring eight points.
Bertie's win bumped their record up to 10-1. As for Martin County, their loss dropped their record down to 7-6.
Bertie will face off against Franklin at 9:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Martin County, they will head out on the road to take on Pamlico County at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. One thing working in Pamlico County's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last four matches.
