Cheney is 9-1 against Chaparral since April of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Cardinals will host the Roadrunners at 4:00 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Cheney is probably headed into the contest with a chip on their shoulder considering Council Grove just ended the team's nine-game winning streak on Tuesday. They fell just short of the Braves by a score of 12-11.
Josh Burdick put in work while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 1-for-3.
In other batting news, Cameron Eastman made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-4 with two triples, one stolen base, and two RBI. Coby Robinson was another key player, scoring two runs while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances.
Meanwhile, Chaparral made easy work of Skyline on Monday and carried off a 13-4 win. Considering the Roadrunners' hitters had been struggling lately, the high-scoring outing was a much-needed turnaround.
Like Cheney, Chaparral also got a great game from a two-way player: Kale Greve. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing 3.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. The dominant performance also gave Greve a new career-high in strikeouts (three). He was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-4.
In other batting news, Chaparral let Ty Hadsall and Carter Hostetler run wild. Hadsall scored two runs and stole four bases while going 2-for-5, while Hostetler scored two runs and stole two bases while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances. Those stolen bases were Hadsall's first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Daxton Hostetler, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-4.
Cheney's defeat dropped their record down to 9-3. As for Chaparral, their victory bumped their record up to 3-1-1.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Thursday as neither team is afraid to steal. Cheney has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.3 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Chaparral struggles in that department as they've been averaging 5.4 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Cheney took their win against Chaparral in their previous meeting back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 14-4 score. Do the Cardinals have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Roadrunners turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
