The Columbus Discoverers were able to grind out a solid victory over the Grand Island Islanders on Thursday, taking the contest 15-10.
The team relied heavily on Naomi Robertson, who went 2-for-3 while logging 3 runs, 1 stolen base, and 1 RBI. The two hits were her most since the 1st, when she had two vs. Norfolk. The team also got some help from Tressa Kucera, who went 1-for-3 while logging 2 RBIs, 2 runs, and 1 double.
Columbus hit smart and finished the game with no strikeouts. They have not posted that few strikeouts since the 3rd, when they also struck out zero times.
On Grand Island's side, Alaina Kenney made the most of her time in the batter's box despite the final result and went 2-for-3 while posting 2 RBIs, 2 runs, and 1 double. The two RBIs were her most since at least October 8th last year, when she brought in two vs. Columbus. Zoe Brooks was another key player, going 2-for-4 while posting 4 RBIs, 1 double, and 1 run.
Columbus is now 5-11, having gone 4-2 since their nine-game losing streak ended. As for Grand Island, they have traveled a rocky road for a while, having lost 22 of their last 23 games, dating back to last year. That leaves them at an 0-16 record this season.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Columbus will challenge Bellevue East at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. As for Grand Island, they will face off against Norfolk at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Panthers will roll in looking for their sixth straight win, something the Islanders surely won't give up without a fight.
