Matthew Gonzales was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Those seven strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and one double. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last seven games he's played.
In other batting news, Logan Cortez was incredible, going a perfect 4-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in March of 2024. Lukas Ozzello was another key player, going 2-for-3 with four runs, one triple, and two RBI.
La Veta always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .844. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, it was a proper cat-fight when Peyton challenged Colorado Springs Christian on Thursday. The Panthers put the hurt on the Lions with a sharp 12-2 win. The Panthers haven't had any issues with the Lions recently, as the game was their seventh consecutive victory against them.
The team relied heavily on Zayden Ebbert, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Liam Stewart, who went 1-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
Peyton's win was their tenth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 12-1. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.8 runs over those games. As for La Veta, their win bumped their record up to 10-3.
Wednesday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. La Veta has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .533. However, it's not like Peyton struggles in that department as they've averaged .512. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
