The Santa Cruz Valley Dust Devils struggled with assists on Thursday (the Horizon Honors Eagles had nine more) and sadly the final score reflected it. Santa Cruz Valley fell 58-49 to Horizon Honors. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Santa Cruz Valley in their matchups with Horizon Honors: they've now lost eight in a row.
Several Dust Devils players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Nathan Harris, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 18 rebounds. Harris is absolutely dominating the rebound category: he's posted at least eight every time he's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Daniel Contreras, who scored 16 points.
It was another big night for Matthew McEnaney, who scored 18 points along with nine rebounds and seven blocks for Horizon Honors. McEnaney has been hot recently, having posted two or more blocks the last ten times he's played. Max Gerelick was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with four steals.
Santa Cruz Valley now has a losing record at 6-7. As for Horizon Honors, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 11-7.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Santa Cruz Valley will challenge Sequoia Pathway Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Sequoia Pathway Academy comes in still looking for their first win of the season. Horizon Honors on the road again on Tuesday and play against Tempe Prep at 7:00 p.m. on January 16th. The timing isn't great for Tempe Prep: they have been struggling with four straight losses at home, while Horizon Honors has snatched up four consecutive wins on the road.
