The Huntington Highlanders pushed their score all the way to 61 on Friday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They fell to Wheeling Park 66-61. While losing is never fun, Huntington can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' West Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 48th, while Wheeling Park is ranked seventh).
Several Highlanders players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Mikey Johnson, who dropped a double-double on 20 points and 11 rebounds. Johnson scored a full 32.8% of Huntington's points, the third time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jayden Clark, who scored 19 points.
Huntington's defeat ended a 12-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 1-2. As for Wheeling Park, the win for they keeps them at an undefeated 4-0.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Huntington will challenge Ironton at 8:15 p.m. on Thursday. As for Wheeling Park, they will head out on the road to face off against Brooke at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
