Basketball Recap: Ysleta Comes Up Short

Ysleta dropped down to 6-8 on Saturday, ending the team's three-game streak of wins. They came up short against the Taft Raiders, falling 60-38. While losing is never fun, the Indians can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 1092nd, while the Raiders are ranked 506th).

When it comes to explaining why Ysleta lost, don't look at Donovan Martinez. Despite the final result, he shot 47% from the field to rack up 18 points and eight boards. Mateo Hernandez also deserves some recognition as he posted his first blocks of the season.

As for Taft, the win was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 8-6. The victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 67.3 points over those games.

Taft found their leader in sophomore Axel Tsague, who went 7-for-13 on his way to 16 points and seven steals. The contest was Tsague's third in a row with at least 16 points. Aiden Biscaino was another key player, putting up 11 points and seven assists.

Ysleta didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 32-30 win against Socorro on the 9th. As for Taft, they have also already played their next game, a 70-56 defeat against Marshall on the 9th.
