The Latta Vikings struggled with assists on Friday (the Lake View Wild Gators had seven more) and sadly the final score reflected it. Latta took a serious blow against Lake View, falling 71-40. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Latta in their matchups with Lake View: they've now lost four in a row.
When it comes to explaining why Latta lost, one person who can't be blamed is Shawniza Bethea. Despite the final result, she scored 15 points along with two blocks. That's the first time this season that Bethea posted two or more blocks. Another player making a difference was Layla Hyatt, who scored six points along with six rebounds.
Jaleya Ford was her usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 31 points and 13 rebounds for Lake View. Ford has been hot recently, having posted 15 or more points the last nine times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Zy'Kiara Waters, who scored 18 points along with six rebounds and five steals.
Latta dropped their record down to 5-10 with that defeat, which was their sixth straight on the road. As for Lake View, the win was the eighth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 18-4.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Latta's road trip will continue as they head out to face Hannah-Pamplico at 6:15 p.m. on January 30th. As for Lake View, they will take on Green Sea Floyds at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Green Sea Floyds will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps South Carolina Rankings (they are ranked 225th, while Lake View is ranked 69th).
