Basketball Recap: Gibbs Falls Despite Big Games from Janaiya Miller and Nyla Brinson

After flying high against Boca Ciega last Monday, Gibbs came back down to earth. The Gibbs Gladiators fell 53-42 to the St. Petersburg Green Devils on Wednesday. The Gladiators were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Green Devils apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in December of 2023.

Gibbs' loss came despite strong showings from Nyla Brinson and Janaiya Miller. Brinson went 7 for 11 on her way to 14 points and seven rebounds, while Miller posted eight points and nine boards. Those eight points gave Miller a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Lakeyia Thompson, who earned four points and seven rebounds.

St. Petersburg found their leader in freshman Shaw Summer, who dropped a double-double on 20 points and 15 boards. That makes it three consecutive games in which Summer has scored at least a third of St. Petersburg's points. Another player making a difference was Ella Abernethy, who went 6 of 11 on her way to 12 points and five steals.

Gibbs' loss dropped their record down to 1-4. As for St. Petersburg, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 5-2.

Gibbs will take on Apalachee in a holiday battle at TBD on Wednesday at. As for St. Petersburg, they won't have much time to rest: their next game is against East Lake at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. St. Petersburg is facing East Lake at the right time seeing as East Lake is stuck on a five-game losing streak.
