Baseball Recap: Verbena Turns Things Around After Road Loss

There's no place like home for Verbena, who bounced back after a loss on the road last Thursday. They blew past the Holy Spirit Catholic Saints 14-5 on Friday. Considering the Red Devils have won nine contests by more than five runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.

Landon Brown made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Verbena is 3-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 8-10 otherwise. Brown was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 2-for-5. That's the most hits he has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, Verbena let Jaxson Kelley and Houston Brothers run wild. Kelley got on base in four of his five plate appearances with one triple, one stolen base, and two RBI, while Brothers went 3-for-5 with three runs, one triple, and one RBI. That's the most RBI Kelley has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Versain Guzman, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-1.

Verbena always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .537. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Holy Spirit Catholic only posted an OBP of .242.

Verbena is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last eight games. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-11 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.5 runs over those games. As for Holy Spirit Catholic, they dropped their record down to 6-10 with the loss, which was their third straight on the road.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Verbena will venture away from home to face off against Comer at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. As for Holy Spirit Catholic, they will head out to challenge Holt at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.
