No. 1 Montverde Academy, No. 3 University to meet in all-Florida final at GEICO Nationals

No. 1 Montverde, No. 3 University to meet in final game of the season.

An all-Florida final is set for Saturday in New York at GEICO Nationals as No. 1 Montverde Academy (Montverde) and No. 3 University (Fort Lauderdale) dominated semifinal matchups.

Friday's first contest was a rematch from the Spalding Hoophall Classic between University and No. 2 Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.), who ran away with an 83-69 win back in January.

This time around, University flipped the script by dismantling Oak Hill Academy 80-65.

The Sharks (35-1) were led by their three stars: five-star junior forward Vernon Carey Jr. (29 points, six rebounds), senior West Virginia pledge Trey Doomes (17 points, 11 rebounds and four assists) and sophomore phenom Scottie Barnes (22 points, six rebounds and five assists in just 13 minutes). Florida's Class 5A state champions have won 18 games in a row, including the last 15 by final margins of 10 points or more.

Another impressive season comes to a disappointing end for Oak Hill Academy (44-2). Will Richardson (23 points, six assists) and David McCormack (16 points, 10 rebounds) led the way for head coach Steve Smith. Kentucky signee Keldon Johnson only played in the second half due to a sprained ankle, scoring just six points on 2 of 7 shooting from the field.

In the second semifinal contest, Montverde Academy (34-0) was in control from the start, jumping to a 19-2 lead over No. 6 Findlay Prep (Henderson, Nev.) and never looking back.

The Eagles were led by R.J. Barrett (22 points, 10 rebounds and three steals), who became the all-time leading scorer in GEICO Nationals history on a monster put-back dunk to give his team a comfortable 13-point lead entering the fourth quarter.

The nation's top-ranked team cruised to a 71-53 victory and will compete for its record fourth event title tomorrow at noon EDT on ESPN2.

Montverde Academy also got big contributions from Gonzaga commit Filip Petrusev (21 points, seven rebounds and three steals) and Andrew Nembhard (eight points, eight rebounds and five steals).

Findlay Prep (32-5) was led by Reggie Chaney (15 points, seven rebounds) and Bol Bol (12 points, six rebounds and three blocks).

Several NBA-bound stars were on the sideline at Christ the King High School on Friday, including 2016-17 MaxPreps National Player of the Year Michael Porter Jr., Jaren Jackson Jr. and Collin Sexton.
