The Horizon Hawks will be taking part in a tournament against the Dr. Phillips Panthers at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Horizon is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.9 runs per game this season.
Horizon is probably headed into the matchup with a chip on their shoulder considering East Ridge just ended the team's six-game winning streak on Tuesday. They fell 12-8 to the Knights. The pitching woes were uncharacteristic for the Hawks, who until this game were averaging 1.68 runs allowed.
Mackenzie Duncan and Addison Lamb were huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. Throwing, Duncan struck out eight batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and nine unearned) runs off four hits. Meanwhile, Lamb tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in nine consecutive appearances. At bat, Duncan got on base in all four of her plate appearances with two RBI and one double, while Lamb went 1-for-4 with one triple, one run, and one RBI. That triple was Lamb's first of the season.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Paisley Hernandez, who scored a run and stole two bases while going 1-for-3. She is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last seven games she's played. Another was Lila Hernandez, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-4.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Dr. Phillips). They were the clear victors by a 27-12 margin over Evans on Friday. The result was nothing new for the Panthers, who have now won seven contests by eight runs or more so far this season.
Briana Lohr was a standout: she fired off two home runs, four runs, and four RBI while going 3-for-3. Those two home runs gave her a new career-high. Samantha Rome was another key player, scoring four runs and stealing four bases while going 4-for-4.
Dr. Phillips kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. They are 8-1 when they post 11 or more hits.
Dr. Phillips' win bumped their record up to 9-4. As for Horizon, their loss dropped their record down to 16-3.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Wednesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Horizon has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 6.1 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Dr. Phillips struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3.6 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Everything went Horizon's way against Dr. Phillips in their previous matchup back in April of 2023, as Horizon made off with a 10-0 victory. Will the Hawks repeat their success, or do the Panthers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
