Santa Margarita is 0-9 against Mater Dei since October of 2014 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Santa Margarita Eagles will be staying on the road to face off against the Mater Dei Monarchs at 7:00 p.m. on October 27th. Santa Margarita will be hoping to continue their three-game streak of scoring more points each match than the last.
Santa Margarita and Servite (ranked 80 and 79 in the MaxPreps national rankings respectively) squared off in a high-profile contest. Santa Margarita fell 50-42 to Servite on Friday. This was one game where the offenses had no trouble playing at a high level.
Santa Margarita's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Trent Mosley, who gained 237 total yards and four touchdowns, and Skylar Lendsey who rushed for 140 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 8.8 yards per carry. Mosley's longest reception was for an incredible 84 yards. James Johnson was another key contributor, throwing for 144 yards and two touchdowns while completing 80% of his passes.
Meanwhile, Mater Dei can now show off six landslide victories after their most recent match on Thursday. They claimed a resounding 55-13 victory over Orange Lutheran on the road. Given Mater Dei's advantage in MaxPreps' national football rankings (they are ranked fifth, while Orange Lutheran is ranked 75th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Mater Dei got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Ajon Bryant out in front who rushed for 155 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 9.7 yards per carry. Nathaniel Frazier also deserves a shout-out for his two touchdowns.
Mater Dei's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB six times. Leading the way was Nasir Wyatt and his three sacks.
With Santa Margarita's defeat and Servite's win, both teams now sport identical 5-4 records.
Santa Margarita took a serious blow against Mater Dei in their previous matchup back in October of 2022, falling 52-7. Can Santa Margarita avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
