Sixth-year Harpursville varsity player
Hannah Kimmel set the Section IV career scoring record Wednesday night during a 67-45 victory over Unadilla Valley in the Midstate Athletic Conference.
The senior forward scored 36 points to reach 2,217 for her career. The record-breaking points came on a drive late in the second quarter to surpass Megan Shay of Candor, who scored 2,205 points in a career that concluded in 2005.
Her previous basket had pushed Kimmel past Stefanie Collins, a 2001 Odessa-Montour graduate with 2,204 points.
The game was halted for a brief ceremony after the historic basket, and Kimmel sat out the remainder of the half before coming back to score 10 more points in the second half.
BOYS BASKETBALL: PSAL CRACKS DOWNThe PSAL handed out
substantial penalties to South Shore and Thomas Jefferson for their part
in a fracas that led to fans spilling onto the court last week at South
Shore.
Both teams were ordered this week to forfeit their next
two league games. Additionally, the two players who started the altercation
by coming to blows will be suspended at least an additional two
league games, PSAL spokeswoman Margie Feinberg announced.
The PSAL had already punished South Shore by bumping the team out of the last weekend's Mid-Winter Classic.
BOYS LACROSSE: MIDDLETOWN AWARDED STATE FINALSThe NYSPHSAA boys lacrosse tournament is branching out again.
The tournament title games had generally rotated between Central New York and Long Island sites before the finals tripleheader was awarded to Rochester in 2009. Now, the 2012 finals have been awarded to Middletown High School.
Middletown recently hosted the state boys soccer final fours for the first time to begin a two-year contract for that event. Section IX last hosted the lacrosse championships in 1994 at Dietz Stadium in Kingston.
This spring's championship games are scheduled to be played at Cicero-North Syracuse.
